This month’s ALF Voices blog post is by our Program Manager, Néstor Durón, a recent addition to the ALF team. We’re excited to welcome Néstor to the team and greatly appreciate his broad experience managing teams, developing and running programs, and work in both the public and private sectors. Are you a native islander? If not, what brought you to the island?
No, I am not a native islander. I was drawn to Roatán by its unique blend of cultural richness and natural beauty. The opportunity to contribute to community development through ALF’s initiatives captivated me and led me to make Roatán my second home.
What inspired you to work with ALF?
My passion for community development and the desire to make a meaningful impact brought me to ALF. The organization’s commitment to creating positive change in Roatán aligns with my values, and the focus on education and community building resonated deeply with me.
How have you noticed our work impact Roatán’s community?
I’ve witnessed ALF’s work profoundly impact Roatán’s community. The establishment of affordable housing communities and educational programs has brought about positive transformations. The increased literacy rates, empowered individuals, and strengthened community bonds reflect the tangible impact of our efforts.
What is your favorite part of working with ALF?
The most rewarding aspect of working with ALF is seeing the real and lasting change in people’s lives. Witnessing individuals and communities thrive due to our programs fuels my dedication. Also, the collaborative and supportive work environment at ALF makes every day fulfilling.
What are you looking forward to in the future with ALF? This could be with future programs, initiatives, personal goals, a hope for Roatán, etc.
In the future, I am excited about expanding our programs and initiatives. I envision new educational projects, sustainable community development, and enhanced partnerships with local entities. My personal goal is to contribute to the continuous growth and success of ALF, making Roatán an even better place for its residents.

Outside of work, you can find me exploring Roatán’s hidden gems, from scenic viewpoints to vibrant local markets.
Being a food enthusiast, I take great delight in exploring and savoring native Roatán cuisine. Whether it’s enjoying a hearty baleada, indulging in fresh seafood dishes, or discovering hidden gems in the local food scene, I’m on a culinary adventure to experience the best flavors Roatán has to offer.
