ALF Voices: Josh Whittaker

What is your role with ALF?

Currently, I am an active volunteer and my current position in the organization is Coach of the athletic programs.

Are you a native islander?  If not, what brought you to the island?

I am a native islander and I was raised in the community of Flowers Bay.

What inspired you to work with ALF?

ALF has given me a greater understanding of life. Seeing how hardworking and friendly the staff is has really had an impact on my life.  ALF gives me space to grow while being there every step of the way to guide me when needed.

How have you noticed our work impact Roatán’s community?

I think ALF has a very powerful impact on our communities from the BLP programs to Library, sports and housing project; All has been very impactful to the kids, teenagers and community in general; giving us a place to learn, to make mistakes and to just feel safe in.

What is your favorite part of working with ALF?

The diverse number of events we have; from children’s day to sports events, Christmas events etc. Being able to support and be a part of those events is very special to me.

What are you looking forward to in the future with ALF?  This could be with future programs, initiatives, personal goals, and a hope for Roatán, etc.

I’m looking forward to how much ALF will grow and continue to impact different communities here on Roatan. My goal is to expand sports at ALF here on the island starting with my community; Flowers Bay.  Also, for ALF to be known not only for the role they play with kids academically but also in athletic sports.

Any fun facts you would like to share about yourself.

I have been playing basketball since I was 9 years old. I was able to represent my country Honduras internationally (in Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador & Panama) and at age 15 I was recognized as best power forward (Basketball) earning a place among the top five performers in Mexicali, Mexico.
