ALF and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

ALF is committed to supporting the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. We believe that if the public sector, private sector, communities, and individuals are all working towards the same goals, we can make a difference in the future of our planet and the people who live here.

While not prioritizing all 17 goals, ALF touches on a broad range of them through our Community Development and Education programs.  Below is how we have been working towards supporting the UNSDGs and joining in the global effort toward a better world.

Community Development

Our affordable housing community touches a broad range of the SDG’s. We see equitable access to dignified housing as an integral component of reaching the SDGs and at ALF we’re committed to seeing this happen. Here is how we’re addressing the goals:

  • Goal 1: No Poverty – Our primary goal is to provide opportunities for the disadvantaged populations of Honduras through access to dignified housing.  We see this as a first step in people moving away from poverty and towards success. Our homes are clean, safe and in a beautiful neighborhood.
  • Goal 2: Zero Hunger – A primary outcome of our affordable housing community is to increase households’ expendable income each month, allowing families to reallocate their funds to basic needs and other wants.
  • Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing – Our housing community promotes active lifestyles with our parks and green spaces, community activities and access to a sustainable and organic community garden space.
  • Goal 5: Clean Water and Sanitation – With running water, and an environmentally sound septic/drainage system on our property, each home will have a safe and clean water system for their use.
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – We not only hire members of our community for jobs in our organization, but we also provide access to a library, professional development courses and economic training, all within the community property.
  • Goal 9: Reduced inequalities – Safe and dignified housing is a matter of inequality. Those with money can afford a nice house in a safe community.  Those without money must brave the challenges of low-income communities. Our solution is to bridge the gap with our dignified affordable housing community
  • Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – We have our own grey and black water treatment plant, organic community garden and composting processes in place for all community members. We also provide cleaning supplies that are earth-friendly to all homeowners as part of their amenities.
  • Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – Our community requires individuals to engage in civic action through membership in a community organization. We ask people to take care of their home and their shared resources together, promoting a strong tie to their community and their broader society.

Education

Our many educational programs aim to increase access to high-quality education and promote professional development through literacy, scholarships and life-skills education. These programs address the following goals:

  • Goal 1: No Poverty – Increasing academic attainment and professional development opportunities will provide further access to good jobs and a reduction in poverty.
  • Goal 2: No Hunger – As communities gain access to better jobs, their ability to provide for themselves and their families will increase.
  • Goal 4: Quality Education – This strikes at the heart of our work. We provide quality education. Our teachers are well-trained. Our scholarship students are high-achieving and go-getters. We want to change the world by educating minds.
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – Our professional development courses and opportunities provide people with a chance to enhance their marketability and potential for a good job.
